Age guidelines: the official position
Meta recommends the Quest headset for players aged 13 and over. This is not arbitrary. It reflects research into eye development — children's visual systems are still maturing, and sustained use of a fixed-focal-depth display before age 13 is not yet well-studied enough for a blanket "safe" recommendation.

For players aged 13–17: the experience works very well. Delivery speed, bowler type, pitch conditions, and field settings are all adjustable — a 13-year-old facing 55 mph straight pace is having an appropriately calibrated experience, not the same session as a county academy player facing 85 mph late swing. Physical safety for junior players
Session length
Start with 15–20 minute sessions for younger juniors (13–14). Take a 10-minute break before any continuation. Eyes and the vestibular system — the balance system in your inner ear — need time to adapt to VR. Most juniors adapt within three to four sessions and can comfortably extend to 25–30 minutes. Do not run consecutive sessions without breaks.
Eye health
The Quest headset displays at a fixed focal depth of approximately 2 metres. This differs from natural vision, which shifts focal depth constantly. For the session lengths recommended above, there is no current evidence of harm for players aged 13+. If a junior experiences eye fatigue, blurring, or headache during or after a session, end the session and do not resume until the symptoms resolve. Persistent symptoms should be reviewed by a professional.
Play space
A clear 2 m × 2 m area minimum, 3 m × 3 m recommended. Junior players often swing more freely than adults — set the Quest Guardian boundary conservatively, leaving 60 cm clearance from walls. Remove any objects at arm and bat height. See our full setup guide for room configuration.
Supervision
First-time junior players should be supervised for at least the first session. Not because the hardware is dangerous, but because a player who has never worn a headset before will sometimes step outside their Guardian boundary while tracking a delivery. An adult present can catch any drift before it becomes a problem.
How junior players actually respond
The short version: junior players take to VR cricket faster than adults do.
Adults sometimes spend their first session overthinking the hardware — "is that what the ball actually does?", "am I standing in the right position?", "this feels strange." Junior players, who have grown up with screens and often with gaming, typically just start playing. The adaptation period is shorter. The engagement is higher.
The competitive element helps. Junior players respond very well to the shot maps and statistics — they want to beat their last score, improve their shot accuracy percentage, and out-perform their teammates. The data creates a feedback loop that adult players sometimes need to be coached into using, and junior players adopt naturally.

How cricket academies use VR training for juniors
Several academies using CricketX for their academy programmes run it as a structured component of junior development, not just an optional extra. The typical model:
- Technical drilling sessions: Coaches configure specific delivery types targeting a known weakness — for example, a junior who plays at the ball outside off stump rather than leaving it. The player faces 40 deliveries on that line and reports on each. The coach reviews the shot map and bat path after the session.
- Winter volume maintenance: Junior players lose significant batting volume in winter when outdoor nets close and indoor facility time is rationed. VR sessions at home — on the same headset they use at the academy — maintain the repetitions through the off-season. Ontario Cricket Academy uses this model specifically for the Canadian winter.
- Pre-net mental preparation: Some coaches run a 10-minute VR session before a physical net session. The idea: get the eye trained on ball flight before the player faces real bowling. Anecdotally, the quality of net sessions following VR warm-ups is higher.
- Skill competition and benchmarking: The app's data allows coaches to benchmark junior players against each other and against themselves over time. Shot accuracy against specific delivery types becomes a trackable metric across a full development season.
Technical setup tips for junior players
Headset fit: the Quest has an adjustable head strap and inter-pupillary distance (IPD) setting. Smaller heads often need the strap shortened fully. A headset that shifts during a swing will hurt tracking. Spend 60 seconds getting the fit right.
Delivery speed: start juniors at 50–60 mph, regardless of their real-cricket level. The adjustment curve is shorter at lower pace. Increase by 5 mph per session until the player is at an appropriate challenge level.
Session structure: 15 minutes on, 10 minutes off for the first three sessions. After that, follow the player's comfort level. Do not push through eye discomfort.
